WALKTHROUGH: HOW ONE PLAYER REACHED 'WEB DEVELOPMENT' WITHOUT CLEARING THE ACCOUNTING LEVEL
What the post actually says: a robotic voice, a corner of the room, a run of majors, two jobs that were never on the map and one known issue with AI. Annotated by the Nerd Panel and a patch-notes professional.

RIYADH — The post went up on Thursday, October 23, 2025, titled "The Side Quest Became The Story" and subtitled "How Curiosity Not Credentials Shaped My Life." Pat Chnotes, who writes patch notes for a living, points out that the heading on the page itself reads "The Side Quest That Became the Story," making it the only save file she has seen ship with two titles. "Minor bug," she said. "Won't fix."
TUTORIAL. Hearing "You got mail," Mr. Samman writes, made him feel "like the future was talking directly to me." He adds: "Not metaphorically. Literally. That robotic voice lit something up in me." Players will recognise the moment the tutorial ends and the open world begins.
OPEN WORLD. While other guys were glued to football, the post says, he was glued to a CRT monitor, logged into IRC. "I didn't know what I was looking for," he writes. "But I knew it wasn't on TV." The unlocks came in order: music, then pictures, then message boards, then code. The early internet, he writes, felt like "this secret world where everything was a puzzle… and if you could learn the language, you could belong."
MAIN QUEST (ABANDONED). "So naturally, I did the logical thing: I majored in Accounting." Then Computer Information Systems, which "lasted one semester. It made me hate computers. Too rigid. Too complex. I gave up." Two more changes of major followed before a Political Science degree. "Slow route," said Speedy Runn, a speedrunner. "Then he clips straight through the wall into web development. We'd study that run."
UNEXPECTED REWARDS. "And yet," the post continues: first real internship, web development; first corporate job, network services. "Somewhere along the way, the thing I thought I had to leave behind… became the only thing that made sense." He is plain about it: "I wasn't trained for this." He was, he writes, "just a curious kid clicking hyperlinks on a grey-background Yahoo page in 1995."
KNOWN ISSUES. Almost 30 years later the pull is back, with AI. Not, the post stresses, "to chase trends or go viral or crank out 'content,'" but "to speak." The issue is everyone else: "Fast. Loud. Repetitive. Surface-level." Back then, he writes, you had to learn the machine's logic "before you could bend it into art." Now people "skip the learning. They skip the listening." Chet Kode of the Nerd Panel filed it as a balance complaint. "He isn't asking for a nerf," he said. "He's asking people to read the manual."
The post closes with a message to his younger self, "huddled in a corner while everyone else watched football." Not to study harder. Not to choose a different major. "Keep going. Learn it deeper. This might end up being your bread and butter someday." Kahn Sole of the Retro Desk said he had nothing to add, and added nothing.
