COMEDIAN'S DOG BIT SLIPS ITS LEASH, TAKES OVER ENTIRE SET; ROOM 'PUSHED BACK, THEN FOLLOWED'

What began as an honest complaint wandered off the set list and refused to come back. Behaviourists say that was the best thing about it.

Meesh, mid-tangent, in Why I Don't Like Dogs. No dogs were harmed. Several were mildly offended.

Canine authorities this week reviewed Why I Don't Like Dogs, a 2025 bit that, according to the comedian's own notes, began with nothing more than being annoyed.

"I was annoyed. The room pushed back," Mr. Samman wrote. "Staying honest is what gave it life." Behaviourists call this the riskiest route through a comedy club: announcing an unpopular opinion about dogs to a room that contains, statistically, several people whose phone background is a dog. Security relaxed when one patron, a colonial marine back from LV-426, declared the bit "not even the scariest thing I've seen this year."

The room did push back. Mr. Samman did not retreat to the planned material. He stayed on the tangent, honest and outnumbered, until the tangent became the set. "It slipped the leash," said one witness, who is fictional and owns two spaniels. "Then it led the walk."

In a week in which this paper reports that every level-up in Mr. Samman's life came from optional content, the Comedy Desk notes that the same rule appears to apply on stage. Nobody would put a complaint about dogs on a set list. It is the part people remember.

Dogs were invited to respond. They declined, but were observed wagging, slightly.
